Microbiological Fractionation of Sulphur Isotopes.

چکیده
A fractionation of sulphur isotopes was found in all hetabolic processes investigated except those in which elemental sulphur was the starting substrate for growth of Thiobacillus concretivorus and Chromatiurn sp. and for reduction by Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Except for polythionates formed during sulphide oxidation by T. concretivorus or Chromatiurn sp., the products of metabolism were enriched in s2S relative to the starting substrates. The magnitudes of the enrichment differed for different processes and for the same overall process carried out by different organisms. The 8% values (%,) ranged from -46.0 for sulphide from sulphate reduction by Desulfovibrio desulfuricans to + 19.0 for polythionate formed during growth on sulphide by T. comretivorus. Fractionation during sulphate reduction was inversely proportional to rate of reduction when lactate and ethanol were electron donors and directly proportional with molecular hydrogen as the electron donor. Temperature and sulphate concentration, within the normal physiological ranges of these parameters, influenced fractionation only in so far as they influenced rate of reduction. However, anomalous fractionation effects were obtained at low temperatures and when a resting suspension reducing sulphite was subjected to changes in temperature. The data are discussed with reference to the mechanism(s) of fractionation.

Application of sulphur isotopes for stratigraphic correlation.
The sulphur isotopic composition of dissolved sulphate in seawater has varied considerably through time. Certain time intervals are characterised by distinct variations and a relatively high rate of change. These relatively rapid fluctuations allow for correlation of sediment sections using sulphur isotopes. Sulphur isotope reconstructions based on the analysis of carbonate associated sulphate ...
متن کاملAtmospheric composition and climate on the early Earth.
Oxygen isotope data from ancient sedimentary rocks appear to suggest that the early Earth was significantly warmer than today, with estimates of surface temperatures between 45 and 85 degrees C. We argue, following others, that this interpretation is incorrect-the same data can be explained via a change in isotopic composition of seawater with time. These changes in the isotopic composition cou...
متن کاملFractionation of stable carbon isotopes by phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase from c(4) plants.
The active species of "CO(2)" and the amount of fractionation of stable carbon isotopes have been determined for a partially purified preparation of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) carboxylase (EC 4.1.1.31) from corn (Zea mays) leaves. The rates of the enzyme reactions, using substrate amounts of HCO(3) (-), CO(2) or CO(2) plus carbonic anhydrase, show that HCO(3) (-) is the active species of "CO(2)"...
متن کاملEmpirical calibration of oxygen isotope fractionation in zircon
New empirical calibrations for the fractionation of oxygen isotopes among zircon, almandine-rich garnet, titanite, and quartz are combined with experimental values for quartz-grossular. The resulting A-coefficients (‰K) are: for the relation 1000 ln Y-X AY-X (10 /T). The fractionation of oxygen isotopes between zircon and coexisting minerals can provide otherwise unavailable evidence of magmati...
متن کاملMass-independent fractionation of mercury isotopes in the environment
[1] The toxicity of mercury’s methylated species and its biomagnification in aquatic food chains and global dispersion by the atmosphere are the cause of worldwide health problems. Recent reports have observed natural mass-dependent fractionation in mercury isotopes, and recent theoretical work has demonstrated that isotopic separation in mercury is due primarily to nuclear field shifts (nuclea...
